Makeup For Indian Skin: Red Lipstick 101

It’s Raining Red! : Review - Guerlain 123 Vs Dior Favori Red 752 Vs Mac Red

There’s something about red lipstick that makes you feel like you can rule the world. Don’t be afraid to try it because trust me once you do try red lipstick, you’ll be a convert! Red lips are not just for the night, if done right they can be a great day look too. Keep your other make up neutral and low key. For the night, add some very light champagne eye shadow and a simple black eye liner. For something more dramatic, do a cat eye. Avoid the gloss with red lips, and if you do want to use gloss… steer clear of the sparkly stuff and just add a dab of clear gloss to the center of your lower lip.  To ensure a smooth and flawless look, use a lip brush while applying the lipstick. This will give you more control. But first ensure you use some foundation to create a good matte base for your lipstick to adhere too or use a lip primer. Then you can use a lip pencil in a shade similar to your lipstick and fill in your lips but I prefer using the lipstick on a brush as a liner itself, using it at the end to ensure proper definition and precision. Apply your lipstick and voila you are done. This way your lipstick will not only last longer but you will also not have that dreaded and horrible lip liner ring effect!

What To Look For When Choosing A Lipstick:

While more expensive does not necessarily mean better quality, you need to pay attention to the formula of the lipstick itself. With bright and statement colors such as red, bright pink, etc its paramount that your lipstick should have good staying power and not dry your lips out (brighter and more pigmented colors tend to be more drying).  When you pick up a red lipstick it’s to make a statement and make you feel like the queen of the world. Hence picking the right lipstick is vital. While you need not spend major moolah on regular colors, for reds, etc spend the money as the lipstick will last you a long time. Why? Because you’re not going to spend half your life reapplying it when you can be partying and also because most of us mere mortals don’t use statement colors on an everyday basis. Now go ahead pick up that red, paint your lips sexy and rule the world!

Mac Red (Forgive the Dry Alligator Hands - I Was In The Middle Of A Move!)

Left To Right: Dior Rouge in Favori Red 752, Guerlain Rouge Automatique in 123

Mac Red:
Great price point and that’s something that packs a major punch in its favor. Unfortunately its not as long lasting as I hoped for and it dried my lips out a wee bit.  That being said, it’s a great color for a range of Indian skin tones (I’m an NC42). If you don’t have dry lips like I do, then this is a great option. Also maybe it may last longer on people with more moisturized lips. Don’t forget to throw it into your handbag or clutch for touch ups on the go!

Guerlain (in 123):
It’s like a makeupaholic’s wet dream in a lipstick tube. The creaminess of the formula combined with the intensity of its pigment ensures that your red lips will stay red instead of fading and leaving the dreaded lip liner ring effect. With this lipstick you can start the party with blazing red lips and end the night the same way with the color still true on your lips. For me, the biggest bonus is that it does not dry my lips out and that is something great as I have chronically dry lips. And of course the incredibly chic and very glam James Bondish case helps its case immensely. It’s sure to inspire envy in the ladies room when you whip it out of your appropriately tiny  and fabulous clutch.

Dior (in 752 Favori Red):
I love the classic Dior quilted pattern on their case… if only it didn’t start chipping after a while. L  But for now since I’m a very long way off from owning a must have Dior Quilted bag I’ll settle for their luxe looking lippie case. J Now for the real review – I love the formula on this lipstick the best! It goes on like a dream and stays on like it should. No matter how many glasses of wine or how much you muah muah, it stays on making it the longest lasting lipstick of the three I’ve reviewed. Apart from the steep price, I feel this may not suit all Indian skin tones although I feel I can pull this shade off for my NC42 skin tone. These are the only two cons I can even think off when it comes to this baby. It never dries your lips out and keep them looking plump and moisturized and let me tell you… that’s a feat by itself!

Review: Revlon Lip Balm Stains

Make Up For Indian Skin Series

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains: Is it balm? is it a lip stain…? wait it’s both!

Ok now getting down to business …. When Revlon introduced its Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains products recently there was a mad frenzy to try them out and it’s understandable. It’s the moisture you lips need with a healthy punch of color. As most lip stains are drying, this is a perfect solution. Great for everyday use, the price point is reasonable too as it does last you for a very long time.  The formula is very moisturizing although you do need to keep reapplying as needed to keep your lips from drying out.  At first look, they are a bit reminiscent of Clinique’s Chubby Sticks but boy, are these different.  They also have a self-sharpening mechanism to make life easier.

(Psst... For those of you wondering what a lip stain is – it’s exactly what its name suggest, a pigment to stain your lips for s sheer wash of color. It’s great when you need some color on your lips without the heaviness of a lipstick. It can be a liquid or a pencil form like the Revlon Balm Stain or even a felt tip pen like Cover Girl or Smashbox.)

L'oreal Colour Riche Balm in Nourishing Nude,  Revlon Balm Stain in Crush and Honey

With Flash

The two colors I tried were 001 Honey and 005 Crush. Honey is a very sheer color that is great for those with perfectly pink lips. It just did not work on me as it was too sheer and I have to admit my lips are neither pink nor perfect! However you could use another lip stain underneath it and layer this on for a nice glossy finish that will stay on for a while.  Crush is a plummy brown on my lips and is great when you are looking for a deep punch of color to zing up your outfit or for a night out.  The color is intense enough to cover any lip pigmentation issues that are common with Indian skin tones. In a pinch you could even use these on your cheeks.

All in all, find the right match for you and these are great to have in your handbag for all occasions.

PS: Do excuse the crappy photos! I promise to upgrde my camera and skills soon! :P

Makeup For Indian Skin: MAC Penultimate Liner Vs. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner

Make Up for Indian Skin Series: Battle of the Eyeliners!

What I Look For In A Liner:
Ease of use - For everyday I prefer a liquid pen liner
Staying Power - I need something that won't make me look like I've been in the ring with Tyson, black eyes et al!
Intensity Of Pigment - Black has to blacker than the midnight sky… just ask any indian girl!

Product: MAC Penultimate Liner in Rapid Black
Like every self-respecting Indian girl, I’ve had a long lasting relationship with black eyeliner. In my quest for the perfect black liner I’ve tried em all.. Gels, felt tips, kajal sticks, pencils, kohls, cotton swabs (don’t even ask) and a multitude of brands from the Indian stand by of Lakme to international faves like Lancôme to Cargo. Recently having run out of Lancôme’s art liner (which is phenomenally easy to use but has zilch lasting abilities) I decided to try out a new liner. Enter the MAC Penultimate Liquid liner… I really wanted this to work after being a MAC Fluidline devotee for a long time, but I honestly was not impressed with this liner.

The tip is stiff which makes it hard to maneuver. This issue is compounded by the fact that you don’t get enough pigment and need to go over your eyelid over and over again. Quite pricey for a liner, I expected much much more from this liner, as I’m a huge fan of everything MAC and was sorely disappointed.

I will say that it lasts a tad bit longer than Lancôme’s Art liner and is easy to tote around in your handbag without making a mess. (I’ve had one too many purses ruined by badly designed make up containers.) But definitely not an item I would recommend or re purchase.

Product: Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Intense Black
After impatiently waiting for the Mac Penultimate liner to get over, I bought the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. And what happened? The heavens opened and rays of divine light illuminated the cherubs heralding my new favorite make up product of all time!

The Stila flexible felt tip makes lining your eyes a cinch and is very easy to maneuver without having to tug at your eye. While still not as easy to use as Lancôme art liner, this trumps all by having good staying power. I can use this in the morning and still have liner on in the evening! The slim size is easy in your hand and great to tight line your eyes. My only grouse is I wish this had more intensity as a jet-black liner but considering its staying power I’ll settle! So I hope you’ll try this for all those come hither eye make up looks and tell me what you think…  Just perfect for the festive season and all those parties. This is also cheaper than the MAC liner which is a bonus.

Next up I have the L'oreal Intense Liner I'm waiting to try out since I've heard such great things about it! Also did I mention its so much cheaper than even the Stila?

Tell me what’s your fave liner?

Lust Must of the Month: Alexander McQueen Strass Satin Skull Clutch

Ladies and gentlemen feast your eyes on my lust must for the first month of our brand new year...

Love The Skull Detail!
How gorgeous is this clutch?  In true Alexander McQueen manner its refined edginess is underlined with a subtle elegance that elevates it to a state of ‘I have to have it’-ness. I remember seeing an early McQueen show on TV when I was much much younger and was struck by the mature genius in someone so young. I admit it took me a long time to fully appreciate the art of Alexander McQueen. (Yes... I’ve been through certain fashion ‘phases’ like neon Bermuda shorts, padded shoulders and spice girl inspired platforms… just don’t tell anyone!)

Every girl needs at least one McQueen piece in her wardrobe. I however wait for that eventful day. Meanwhile you may be happy to note that the Spice Girls are a thing of my past.

If you liked the Strass clutch, check out the uber cool Studded Knuckle Duster Clutch thats guaranteed to make jaws drop.

Stay tuned for February’s lust must.

‘Tis the season for wishful thinking!

It’s that time of the year again and while I try to stay away from the swarming malls and the horrific weather outdoors, dreaming up some retail therapy seems like the perfect escape. Nothing like gazing at a Chanel quilted bag to make you feel all warm and tingly inside.

So here’s to my wishful thinking er... wish list!

First up…

Everyone needs some sleek champagne flutes to ring in the New Year or to just drown their sorrows midweek with a bit of luxe amidst the daily blah. I've been wanting to buy a pair of good quality flutes but have been looking at alternatives to the classic clear glass and these black ones are perfecto!

And to up the ante and because I like shiny sparkly things… how about these uber glittery flutes from Swarovski? Look at all those gorgeous little crystals in the stem...

I really really need a KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer… although I’m supposed to be on diet and anything baked and sugary is technically off my list. :P I've been gunning for one for a while now and maybe this will be the year of the mixer!

Kitchen Aid Artisan Stand Mixer, Komen Pink

Every kitchen needs one of these…a good quality mandoline means a good quality blade and sturdy construction. Besides there is nothing more boring and painful than slicing all those veggies by hand. Hey… I never claimed patience as a virtue!

Think of the possibilities…gratins, bhajias, home made ‘gourmet’ chips…ahhhh!

I dream in Chanel… the classic Large Flap quilted bag. I believe every wardrobe needs one. This would be perfect with anything and everything from skinny jeans to saris. Now if only the gorgeous bag along with a Tank watch would solve world peace...
O sacred one, need I say more!

When you’re cooped up indoors barely tolerating the ‘slugdery’ of everyday routine, planning the exotic vacation can really help (or maybe depress you further... take your pick!) So I dream a little dream about virgin beaches, pina coladas and decadent spa massages… how about a trip to Seychelles?

I’m already dreaming of spring and there’s nothing like a cute pair of wedges to set the stage! Besides I need something to wear for my imaginary vacay in Seychelles!

Just Because

Why have I randomly posted pictures of shoes from the best trends of Fall 2010? Because I happen to love them very much! Besides everyone needs some occasional eye candy! So tell me, would you dare to wear...

On a side note, I just read that jelly wedges are in… can I say I hate jelly shoes, bags, belts, whatever form they can use 'jelly' in. The only kind I approve of is the edible variety in my trifle pudding and in my doughnut. Sorry jelly but yes, hell… it’s personal!

While adding Choos to my wardrobe is not going to be a reality anytime soon given my unemployed status, its not something that’s going to keep me away from the Choo store (now say Choo shoe store 10 times non stop!)… so much so that the saleslady at the store waves out to me every time she sees me at the mall! J Choo love at its purest I say!
